Ipswich Town could be set to wish goodbye to this player after just one year

David Button became Ipswich Town’s first signing of the summer window following their relegation to the Championship.

The 36-year-old moved to Portman Road after two years at Reading and is expected to assume the role of third-choice goalkeeper.

Kieran McKenna currently has Alex Palmer, Christian Walton and Arijanet Muric also available in between the sticks, leaving them somewhat bloated in that department.

It is imaginable that at least one of those players will be sold on this summer, and all signs point towards it being Muric to make way after news broke that Serie A club Sassuolo have submitted an offer for his services.

The 26-year-old was signed by the Tractor Boys last summer for a £10 million fee, as they prepared for Premier League football.

Muric had previously spent two years at Burnley, before James Trafford overtook him in the pecking order at Turf Moor.

He began the 2024/25 campaign as McKenna’s first choice ‘keeper, but uninspiring displays led to questions over his ability.

This culminated in the winter transfer window, as Ipswich made the decision to purchase Palmer from West Bromwich Albion.

Muric was subsequently dropped and didn’t reclaim his place in the starting 11.

It now seems likely that Palmer will be the No.1 at Portman Road next term, which means that Muric’s time at the club is probably nearing its end, with Sassuolo now reportedly circling .

Prior to the past couple of years, Muric was a highly rated young goalkeeper who was destined to achieve his lofty potential.

Sassuolo clearly still have that talent in mind and believe they have what it takes to get the 26-year-old back to his best.

Coming through the ranks at Manchester City, the shot-stopper made five appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2018/19 Carabao Cup campaign.

He was part of the City squad during that season and the one prior, experiencing what it takes to operate in the country’s best outfit.

Guardiola is notoriously precise over what he requires from his goalkeepers, so for him to place this faith in Muric highlights the 26-year-old’s obvious ability.

A rough few years with Burnley and Ipswich will no doubt have knocked the ‘keepers confidence, but the past has shown that the Kosovo international has what it takes to perform to a high standard.

His passing ability is reminiscent of previous mentor Ederson, with Muric able to pick out a striker with pinpoint accuracy.

This is counterbalanced by momentary lapses in concentration, which have seen the shot-stopper make some silly mistakes in recent years.

If he can irradicate this from his game, another manager would happily harness Muric’s technical ability to help implement their playing style.
