Kieran Lee has been in excellent form for Bolton Wanderers of late but was left to rue missed chances after the club’s loss at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Lee had put together an incredible couple of games in which he scored two and assisted three before the trip to Hillsborough Stadium.

Displacing summer signing Josh Sheehan in the process, it was yet another impressive performance from the Trotters at the weekend, particularly Eoin Doyle but as a team, Bolton should have got on the scoresheet.

Wanderers slipped down to eighth place after the loss but the display will give Lee and Ian Evatt the confidence that if they can continue to create as many chances as they did on Saturday, that they will break back into the play-off places in the near future.

Lee expressed his frustration when he spoke to The Bolton News.

He said: “It was quite quiet at the end because we feel like we have put on a good performance, again, but not put the chances away, again.

“We have gone into games and scored four, then you get games where we can’t get one, so we’re disappointed we’re not putting them away.

“And I don’t know what to put it down to because it has happened too many times. It happened last season as well.”

From the outside looking in Bolton supporters should not be concerned, the real worries come when the side are failing to create chances and look like scoring, the newly promoted Trotters are the opposite.

The Verdict

Evatt was pleased with the performance in his post-match reflection on the whole and therefore, even though it is a little more raw for a player, so should Kieran Lee. Bolton sit second in the expected goals table after the weekend where they failed to build a headstart over sides whose matches were postponed due to international call-ups.

One issue that the Trotters may want to address in January is the lack of cover for the 33-year-old Eoin Doyle up front, Amadou Bakayoko and Nathan Delfouneso on the fringes are more suited to wide roles and therefore there is no immediate backup player.

With Doyle’s place in the side not under threat he can feel secure that he will have more chances to make up for his shortcomings at Wednesday when Evatt’s men face Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
