Liverpool fight back for Man Utd win

Scorers: Toone 3′, Turner OG 32′; Hinds 68′

Liverpool fought back from an early deficit to defeat Manchester United 2-1 in the first of two meetings between these clubs on Sunday.

It took just three minutes for United to take the lead when Ella Toone kept a cool head following a melée in the penalty area after Leah Galton had struck the post and she calmly found a way through a crowd of bodies for the opener.

That lead lasted half an hour before Liverpool levelled when a near post cross saw Emma Koivisto put enough pressure on Millie Turner to divert the ball into her own net.

Missy Bo Kearns came close to pulling off a quick turnaround shortly afterwards but her attempt was met by a fantastic Mary Earps stop to keep it at 1-1 at half-time.

But the comeback was completed after the break as Liverpool won it through Taylor Hinds’ winner on 68 minutes when the captain turned home after the hosts failed to deal with a corner from the right.

The Reds move level on points with United in fourth with the victory, with Marc Skinner’s side dropping points for the fifth time this season.

Leon the hero as Villa edge past Brighton

Scorer: Leon 63′. Red: Pacheco 89′

Aston Villa will be thanking their stars they scraped past Brighton by the skin of their teeth.

The hosts managed a staggering 18 shots to seven over 90 minutes, but the Seagulls remained resilient with Maria Thorisdóttir and Sophie Baggaley kept on their toes.

It wasn’t until after the hour mark that Villa finally broke the deadlock after an impressive solo run from Adriana Leon.

The Canadian ran down the right wing, somehow managed to keep the ball in play at the goal line and finished from a tight angle at the near post.

Unfortunately for Brighton, one shot on target wasn’t enough to find an equaliser even with a man advantage in the dying moments as Maz Pacheco was sent off.

Looking at the table, it’s three big points for ninth-placed Villa as they moved away from the relegation zone, while Brighton sit 10th.

West Ham rally to break Leicester hearts

Scorer: Petermann 68′; Hayashi 90+8′. Red: Cissoko 90+5.

Leicester fell short of their first WSL win since October after collapsing against a struggling West Ham side.

The visitors had more efforts to break the deadlock but it was the hosts who controlled things on the pitch. Eventually, one of two shots on target from the Foxes found the net.

Aileen Whelan led Leicester forward and Lena Petermann managed to split two West Ham defenders and tap home from point-blank range.

However, the Hammers (who have seven losses this season from 10) managed to rally against the odds.

After Hawa Cissoko was shown a second yellow in stoppage time, Honoka Hayashi equalised immediately by bundling the ball over the line despite being a man down.

The draw means the Foxes sit eighth, while the Hammers are second from the bottom thanks to their second draw this season.

Chelsea find their confidence in Bristol

Scorers: James 17′, Cuthbert 34′, Kerr’ 69′. Red: Charles 90+6′

After two major back-to-back stumbles across all competitions, Chelsea returned to winning ways against Bristol City but things ended on a sour note.

Emma Hayes will be pleased with the fluidity on display as the Blues ran the show statistically, and the bottom-side hosts had no answers.

Lauren James opened the scoring after running past defenders with ease and striking from range into the far right corner.

Erin Cuthbert then ensured Chelsea held a comfortable lead by the break when she volleyed home from inside the box.

The infamous deadly duo of Guro Reiten and Sam Kerr then found their magic touch again as the Australian headed home an inch-perfect cross.

A rash decision from Niamh Charles, however, saw her sent off with seconds to go and it’s a loss for the Blues with crunch clashes ahead. She is the first Chelsea player to be shown red since Ann-Katrin Berger in April 2022 (19 months).

With only two shots on target and 26% possession for Bristol, it was another match to forget, becoming their seventh loss across 10 games.

The result sees Chelsea sit top of the table, three points above Manchester City and Arsenal.

Shaw hat-trick lifts City to second

Scorers: Galli 56′; Shaw 9′, 22′, 65′ Roord 25′

Manchester City put Everton to the sword and simultaneously capitalised on big slip-ups from Arsenal and Manchester United.

The visitors dominated the match with 17 shots to six and 67% possession, but one player proved to be on another level.

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw first scored an audacious no-look chip from the edge of the box within 10 minutes before striking a low drive from range to double the lead.

In the blink of an eye, Jill Roord then piled on a third past the Toffees with a smart run and finish in the box before a diving header in the second half saw Shaw secure a hat-trick.

Aurora Galli, however, did stun the visitors with a long-range strike from outside the box but the first-half demolition proved too big for the hosts to overcome.

Looking at the table, Manchester City now sit second above Arsenal and Manchester United, while Everton are seventh.

Saturday’s result

  1. Tottenham 1-0 Arsenal
