The way FC Barcelona dismantled Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League was nothing short of a masterpiece. La Blaugrana were clearly a class above their German counterparts, and the scoreline reflected that dominance. By the final whistle, there was no doubt — Barcelona were the superior side and fully deserved the victory.
However, a result like that is only possible when every single player in the team plays their role right. From the frontline to the goalkeeper, each and every single player on the field had their part to play, and they did so effectively.
Prior to the match, however, there was a chance that a key player could have ended up missing the game. That player was none other than Polish veteran Wojciech Szczesny, who managed to avoid a serious complication ahead of the game.
As highlighted by SPORT, the Polish goalkeeper began to experience serious stomach pain prior to the game. Initially, doctors suspected that it might be appendicitis, and that could have become a major complication for the player.
As it turned out, the discomfort was caused by kidney stones. However, before that diagnosis was confirmed, there was genuine concern that Hansi Flick might have had to start Iñaki Peña in goal if Szczęsny was unavailable.
Fortunately, however, the 34-year-old shot-stopper managed to pass them naturally, and did not end up needing surgery or needing to miss any games. That would prove to be a massive boost, as Barcelona also managed to keep a clean sheet against Borussia Dortmund.
Now, their next fixture is a La Liga clash against Leganes, and it will be one that will potentially test the squad’s energy levels once again. Szczesny’s availability will be a great boost for Hansi Flick, however, as Barça needs all the help they can get to march on to the end of the season.
