Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has been linked with the vacant post at Botswana FNB Premiership club Matebele FC.

The Matebeleng-based outfit has been without a coach since former Cape Town Spurs Technical Director and interim coach Sean Connor left for greener pastures at Jwaneng Galaxy at the end of last season.

Connor guided the team to a 12th-place finish in the previous campaign and an Orange FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to his current employers. However, the Irishman lifted the trophy with Galaxy in his first match in charge of the club.

While the 57-year-old mentor steered Galaxy to a commanding 3-0 win in their opening league match of the 2025/26 season, Matebele suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Township Rollers and are currently in 15th-place in the 16-team championship.

As a result, Matebele have earmarked Letsholonyane as a potential candidate to take over the reins. An insider close to the matter has revealed to Foot Africa that the club has made contact with the Chiefs legend in a bid to understand the feasibility of a potential appointment.

Sources have indicated that talks are still in the early stages but haven’t ruled out the two parties reaching a swift agreement with the club determined to install a permanent head coach early in the new season.

‘Yeye’, as the former Bafana Bafana international is fondly known, is a CAF A license holder, a minimum requirement for coaches to sit in the dugout in the Botswana topflight division. Should a deal materialize, Letsholonyane will join compatriot Owen Da Gama, who was recently appointed as the new head coach of newly rebranded Black Lions.

Letsholonyane held posts at AmaZulu’s Dstv Diski Challenge [DDC] team, national team assistant coach in the 2025 COSAFA Cup in Bloemfontein, African Nations Championship [CHAN], and the U20 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON), although he didn’t travel to Morocco for the continental showpiece.
