Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns versatile midfielder Lebohang Maboe on a free transfer, making him the club’s staggering 10th acquisition of the current transfer window.
The 30-year-old midfield maestro had been in the wilderness after parting ways with the reigning Betway Premiership champions at the end of last season. He spent the latter part of the previous campaign on loan at the now-defunct SuperSport United.
While he arrived at Masandawana as a high-profile signing from Maritzburg United back in the 2017/18 term, he saw little game time in recent seasons. The lack of action was fueled by injuries, which saw him fall down the pecking orders at Chloorkop.
Last season, Maboe made 10 appearances across all competitions for Sundowns, before completing a move to their cross-town rivals, where he chipped in with one goal and two assists in 16 matches, helping the club to avoid relegation.
Now, Maboe is set for a new chapter with his boyhood club as he was part of the development structures at Naturena. The Soweto giants have been active in the transfer market, having missed out on a top eight spot for two consecutive PSL seasons.
In addition, Amakhosi’s waves in the market are due to the club’s return to continental football as they booked their spot in the CAF Confederation Cup by virtue of clinching the Nedbank Cup title at the expense of fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in May.
Chiefs lured South African-born attacking midfielder Ethan Chislett and Nkanyiso Shinga back to their homeland. Moreover, the Glamour Boys also signed Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman, Etiosa Ighodaro, Thabiso Monyane, and Paseka Mako, among others.
Meanwhile, Chiefs have won their first three Betway Premiership matches of the 2025/26 season. Nasreddine Nabi’s side is currently in second place on the log standings, level on points with table toppers Sekhukhune United, who have a superior goal difference.
