Juventus Slated to Bring in Former Toulouse President

After a few weeks of optimism, Juventus don’t really know whether Antonio Conte will return this summer and, in the meantime, they’ll bolster their front office with two additions: Damien Comolli from Toulouse and Matteo Tognozzi, who’s heading back after a spell as Granada’s sporting director, TuttoSport informs.

The French official has had a host of roles throughout his career, including coaching. He has also worked at Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Fenerbahce, and Saint-Etienne. He’ll de facto replace Francesco Calvo, who will go to Aston Villa. He’ll be the general manager, below CEO Maurizio Scanavino and above head of football Cristiano Giuntoli, in the new structure. The roles and the future of the two current execs aren’t completely defined yet, though, Sky informs.

Comolli will ink a three-year contract, as Juventus eye a return to winning ways after five seasons. He was working under the RedBird Capital umbrella, the Milan governors, at Toulouse. Instead, Tognozzi will return to his former position in the scouting department.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Exor president John Elkann is taking matters into his own hands after a few subpar campaigns despite big investments. He may talk to Conte directly.

Our Take on Juventus

Any team can use more experienced execs as long as it doesn’t lead to infighting. They are surely reducing Giuntoli’s role but stopping short of outright pushing him out. The overhaul would be hamstrung from the get-go if they didn’t lure Conte. It might be time for them to start going after other high-profile coaches as they seem headed for a busy summer, although Igor Tudor has done enough to stay and deserves it also for the way he’s been treated.
