Juventus eked out a narrow 1-0 win over Genoa at Stadio Luigi Ferraris to maintain their perfect start to the 2025/26 Serie A season. It wasn’t a pretty affair, but the Turin side got the job done.
Considering Genoa’s defensive-minded football and Juventus’ scoring issues, a low-scoring game was a near certainty. However, the first half was less eventful than anyone had expected. The match got off to a high-intensity start, albeit without clear-cut chances.
Despite controlling possession and pushing forward in numbers, Juventus couldn’t create much in front of Nicola Leali’s goal. Igor Tudor’s side had to wait until the 41st minute for their first chance of the match. Federico Gatti found himself in unfamiliar territory after receiving a sweet-looking pass inside the box. However, his shot posed no threat to Leali.
Jonathan David spurned arguably the best chance of the first half in the 43rd minute as he skied the ball over the crossbar after latching onto a rebound inside the 6-yard box.
Tudor refused to wait much for substitutions at the start of the second half. He replaced out-of-sorts David with Dusan Vlahovic, and it paid off almost immediately. Filip Kostic made a perfect cross from the corner, with the Serbian striker heading it home on the near post.
Genoa hit the crossbar in the 96th minute as Juventus left Luigi Ferraris unscathed. Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.
Michele Di Gregorio – 6/10
With Genoa unable to muster anything noteworthy in the final third, the Juventus goalkeeper had a quiet night, barely called into action.
Federico Gatti – 7/10
The Italian center-back fared well against Valentin Carboni, cutting the Inter loanee off from the game. Needless to say, he was dominant in the air.
Gleison Bremer – 8/10
The Brazilian was the missing component last season as his intimidating presence at the back solidified Juventus’ defensive resilience. Strong in duels and quick to snuff out danger!
Lloyd Kelly – 7/10
With Genoa forwards unable to test him, the former Bournemouth defender used every occasion to venture forward and help in attack.
Pierre Kalulu – 6/10
The ex-Milan star’s attacking limitations came to the fore as he struggled to provide width or creativity down the flank. Defensively spot on, though!
Manuel Locatelli – 6/10
Although he anchored the Bianconeri midfield and never gave the ball away, the Juventus captain failed to provide the spark, often lacking creativity.
Khephren Thuram – 7/10
Far more involved in the attacking play, the Frenchman enjoyed plenty of possession and completed numerous forward runs. However, his decision-making frequently let him down.
Joao Mario – 6/10
It was a decent Serie A debut for the new addition, who looked tidy in possession and rarely misplaced a pass. Yet, like Thuram, he occasionally forgot to pass the ball.
Kenan Yildiz – 5/10
It’s been a while since the Turkish prodigy had a less impactful display. No flashy moments, no decisive contributions, and constantly drifted out of the game.
Francisco Conceicao – 5/10
The diminutive forward looked lively from the start, but his individual effort never produced anything meaningful. Often too slow to get rid of the ball.
Jonathan David – 3/10
Juventus’ marquee summer signing will want to forget this match as soon as possible. Apart from a huge miss late in the first half, he was largely anonymous.
Teun Koopmeiners – 6/10
Dusan Vlahovic – 9/10
Filip Kostic – 8/10
Nico Gonzalez – N/A
