Troy Deeney has completed the natural transition from big mouthed player to big mouthed pundit, and he’s already bringing good value to TV and radio discussions.

Today he was talked about physicality, and the Watford legend decided to use a Chelsea hero as his best example.

John Terry was known as a leader off and on the pitch, and he wasn’t one to shirk a duel. Deeney’s ability to batter defenders into submission with his physicality met its match when he came up against JT.

“I remember playing Chelsea when we first got into the Premier League. We played them in the FA Cup, but when we first got into the Prem and we were in the tunnel, we were a relatively tall team, and we were a physical team,” Deeney said in quotes on TalkSport.

“So I was feeling big and strong, and I remember Terry walked out – they had Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic, Petr Cech, Diego Costa, Oscar – and you just go, ‘Oh wow’.

“That tunnel at Stamford Bridge is really tight as well, so I’m feeling myself. I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to smash him up today. It’s my chance to get at John Terry’.

“And then it’s like, oh no, that ain’t happening. That just ain’t happening. He was just so good. The way he organised, he didn’t let anyone move around, and he was basically just a Rolls Royce. He conducted the whole thing.”

Chelsea have lost their intimidating physical edge

It’s always great to hear stories from the inside, especially about some of our favourite players.

What do you think the opposition feel like when they’re in the Stamford Bridge tunnel now? It’s hard to imagine a less intimidating bunch than the inexperienced youths we’ve got making up a large part of our squad now.
