Even as Barcelona deal with the fresh injury blow to new signing Dani Olmo, they are being greeted with some positive news on the fitness front.

Indeed, according to journalist Victor Navarro, Barcelona midfield heavyweight Frenkie de Jong is taking part in group training today, which comes as a major boost.

Back after over four months

Frenkie de Jong has been out of action since April 21 when he suffered an ankle injury during a match against Real Madrid.

It was initially suggested that the midfielder would be out for only a few weeks, but things turned out much differently.

De Jong’s injury has kept him out of action for nearly five months now, with the midfielder even being advised to consider the possibility of undergoing surgery. However, the 27-year-old refused to go down that route.

There has been a lack of clarity about his situation for a while now, but last week reports emerged claiming that De Jong was feeling better and was closing in on a return to training.

Now, the midfielder is back working with the group, even if it is only a part of the session, much like Gavi, who also continues to work his way back to full fitness.

It is unlikely that De Jong will be available for selection right away but the Dutchman’s return to partial group training is a step in the right direction given the injuries that Barcelona have had in midfield.

Hansi Flick is said to fully trust the former AFC Ajax midfielder and as such his return to fitness will be a welcome boost for the manager and Barcelona.
