Julian Nagelsmann has been confirmed as the new head coach of Germany.

The 36-year-old will take charge of the men’s national side after Hansi Flick was sacked earlier this month following a run of just four wins in 17 matches which included a group stage at the 2022 World Cup.

Nagelsmann will now lead the country into the European Championships on home soil next summer.

The former Bayern Munich boss has been out of work after being dismissed by the Bavarians in March, but was originally placed on a form of gardening leave meaning his contract at the Allianz Arena was still running until 2026 which would leave the Bundesliga champions liable to a fee if another club were interested in Nagelsmann’s services.

However, that contract was mutually terminated allowing the German Football Federation (DFB) to make their move for Nagelsmann without paying a transfer fee.

Nagelsmann, who previously had spells in charge of Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, lifted the Bundesliga title with Bayern in 2022.

His first match in charge will come in a friendly against the USA on 14 October.
