Poor old Julen Lopetegui.
Six months ago he was about to lead Spain into the World Cup and on the cusp of coaching greatness.
Then Real Madrid got involved and now his reputation is in tatters.
The 52-year-old’s standing is in fact in such decline that, apparently, the United States national team refused a meeting with the tactician despite his interest in taking over.
The USMNT have been without a coach since their failure to qualify for the World Cup, with Dave Sarachan acting as interim for their recent friendlies.
And Sports Illustrated have reported that Lopetegui had put his name forward as a potential candidate to take the role permanently but was rejected with US Soccer replying that they were “too far down the line” to think about hiring the former Los Blancos boss.
Oh dear.
