Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata will have to take a significant pay cut if he opts to stay at Old Trafford next season.

Mata’s current deal with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the month.

However, the club announced two weeks back that they are in discussions with the midfielder to extend his contract.

According to The Daily Star, the Spanish international will see a substantial reduction in his salary if he decides to continue his career at the Theatre of Dreams.

The report claims that his weekly wages will be slashed from £170,000 to £100,000.

He will be given add-ons depending on the number of times he features for United next campaign.

The former Chelsea playmaker has become a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made just 18 appearances this past season.

His pace has decreased considerably in recent years which is incompatible with United’s counter-attacking style of play.

The Red Devils are expected to add more attacking talent in this transfer window which will further limit his game-time.

It makes sense for the club to reduce their wage bill for a player who won’t be a regular contributor on the pitch next term.

Mata has established himself as a fan favourite over his seven-year stay in Manchester.

Whether he stays put or decides to leave, the 33-year old will always be respected as a great servant to the club.
