Spanish legend Juan Mata has ended his period of footballing exile by joining Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 36-year-old had been without a club since January this year when he left Vissel Kobe in Japan after a short but unsuccessful stint.

But he will continue his playing journey with Wanderers’ announcement that he has signed a one-year contract for the 2024/25 A League Season.

With the campaign not set to begin until the end of October, it gives Mata time to build his match fitness.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea playmaker is closing in on the 700 appearance mark for club and country in a decorated career which has seen him win the World Cup, Champions League and European Championship.
