Speaking in a press conference ahead of Croatia’s UEFA Nations League game against Denmark on Thursday, Joško Gvardiol reveals he’s happy in Leipzig despite numerous reports linking the central-defender to Chelsea and Manchester City throughout the summer.
“Honestly, I’m happy in Leipzig,” said Gvardiol. “It’s only my second year and I still have a lot to learn and work on myself.” When asked about the reports, the 20-year-old said, he “didn’t think too much about a change.”
Following the closure of the transfer window on September 1, RB Leipzig announced the contract extension of Gvardiol by a further year until 2027 with a significant €5m salary increase.
Looking ahead to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Gvardiol added: “I was able to play a European Championship when I was 19 and now I have a chance at the World Cup when I’m 20. Of course I’m thinking about it. Two or three years ago I wouldn’t have even dared to dream of taking part in a tournament like this. However, there is still down time. Denmark, Austria and my club are waiting first.”
Croatia play Denmark on Thursday before travelling to Austria on Sunday.
