Joao Santos, the agent of Jorginho, opened up about his client’s position at Arsenal and future plans ahead of this summer’s European Championship.
The 32-year-old Italian-Brazilian midfielder has proven a useful part of Mikel Arteta’s squad in North London since his arrival back in January of last year, mostly acting as a rotation option. This season, he’s seen 1350 minutes of action across 28 games with the Gunners.
Jorginho briefly slipped out of view with the Italy national team but has become a regular again under Luciano Spalletti, appearing in all four of the Azzurri’s last games. He’s expected to be part of the squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
Speaking to Radio Sportiva via TMW, Joao Santos first discussed Jorginho’s chances of making the Italy squad for Euro 2024.
“I was at the stadium, I watched him live. Italy are on the right path now, they won two important friendlies in the United States against South American national teams such as Venezuela and Ecuador. Now focus on the European Championship.”
He was asked about the criticisms aimed at his client from the fans, such as his painful and decisive penalty misses in recent years.
“Jorginho lifted the trophy at Wembley, it’s right to think about the positive aspects of his career, not just the negative times. It’s football, that’s how it works, I hope he lifts the trophy in Germany too with the Italy shirt…”
The agent commented on Jorginho’s position with Arsenal in the closing stages of this season.
“The squad is Arsenal’s strength. Today they’re a squad that lead the Premier League, they’re in a position of absolute importance. They’re in the Champions League, they face Bayern and there’ll be a lot of emotion until the end of this season.”
He was asked about Jorginho’s future in North London.
“He’s out of contract with the Gunners, we’ll talk to them because he’s doing well. If they need him from next season…”
Finally, Joao Santos was asked about the idea of seeing Jorginho in Serie A again next season.
“It’s always like this in football. Jorginho has played in Italy all his life, he likes it a lot, why say no?”
