The drama between Flamengo and former manager Jorge Jesus is possibly at an all-time high following statements made by the Portuguese.

According to Jesus, Marcos Braz and Bruno Spindel did not ask for him to return to the club during a meeting in Portugal. The statement generated revolt from the red-black leaders.

Globo claim that the vice president of football, Marcos Braz, and Bruno Spindel, attended a dinner at Jorge Jesus’ house back in December.

The report states that Jesus was indeed asked to return during a delicate time, as Jesus was preparing to lead Benfica into battle against Porto twice within a weeks’ time (Porto would win both games 3-0 and 3-1).

Jesus allegedly asked for his salary to not only be paid in Euros (quoted at a 6:1 exchange rate at the time), but also to have his Benfica wages doubled.

Globo says Jesus requested that Braz and Spindel return to Portugal in January but was met with resistance as the club’s objective was to announce a manager by January 9th.

As a result, they went and got Paulo Sousa from the Poland national team, with the manager paying his own severance fee in order to join Flamengo.

Sousa is signed through December 31st, 2023. It would cost Flamengo R$6m ($1.2m) in order to cut him loose.
