Jordy Clasie has revealed that he chose not to be in the most recent Netherlands squads, and is doubtful of his chances of going to the World Cup as a result.
After impressing at AZ, Clasie was brought back into the Oranje squad earlier this year by Louis van Gaal, who is a fan of the midfielder having worked with him at the 2014 World Cup.
While he was included in the pre-selection for matches since then though, he hasn’t been in the final squads, and he has now revealed that was his choice.
Having had issues with his knee for a while, he preferred to focus on being fully fit to play for his club.
“Both times I called the national coach,” he told VI.
“I suffered from a tendon in my knee for a while. Given the busy schedule with AZ and also my age, it was better if I focused on performing with my club. I explained to the national coach how I stand.”
Given his decision not to be a part of the squads, he understands it’s now unlikely he’ll go to the World Cup.
“The national coach was honest, as always. I realize that it will now be difficult to make it to the World Cup selection,” he added.
“I have thought about it for a long time, it is not easy at all. But I have made a choice which I think is the best for my career. We’ll see what the consequences are.”
