Jonathan dos Santos signs for Club America following LA Galaxy departure | OneFootball

Club America have announced the signing of Mexico international midfielder Jonathan dos Santos.

The 31-year-old left the LA Galaxy in November as a free agent after registering six goals and 12 assists in 103 MLS regular-season appearances.

There had been reported interest in Dos Santos' services from other MLS clubs, including the Houston Dynamo, while a number of Liga MX's best were keeping tabs on the midfielder. Unsurprising considering the quality and experience still on offer from the 59-time Mexico international.

In the end, it was Club America who won the race for his signature.

"I feel I'm in pretty good shape," said Dos Santos (via ESPN). "I am 31 years old. People say that I am coming to retire here; that's not true. I still have a lot to give in my career and to this club. I am hungry. I want to win titles with América and make the fans happy."

Dos Santos' father, Zizinho, and older brother, Giovanni, also plied their trade with America - the latter only leaving as recently as the summer of 2021 after 42 appearances for the club. This is the midfielder's first time playing in his native Mexico after his time in the United States, and in Span with Barcelona and Villarreal.

"Since I was a kid, I dreamed that one day I would play in America," Dos Santos added on his move to Las Águilas. "My father played here, Gio too, the Dos Santos' already made history in this club.

"My dad always told us, you have to play for America, you have to fulfill that dream. It's the best team in Mexico. I left the country 20 years ago, so having the opportunity to return and play for the best team is a big honor for me."

America finished top of the Liga MX Apertura table but crashed out at the quarter-final stage against Pumas. They begin their Clausura campaign to Puebla on January 7.
