Jon Dahl Tomasson could leave Blackburn Rovers role for Sweden job

There have been a lot of contrasting reports about Jon Dahl Tomasson's future over the past 24 hours, but the most recent update could have Blackburn Rovers fans looking for who could be the next boss in the dugout at Ewood Park.

It's been a turbulent week for Blackburn. Their transfer window turned into a bit of laughingstock when they signed all the required documents to get a deal for American forward Duncan McGuire over the line, but they clicked save instead of submitting the documents to the EFL, and the transfer fell through, as per The Athletic.

Then, yesterday came some big news about the future of Rovers' manager. Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reported that their Danish manager was set to leave the club. Just under 20 minutes later, Rovers reporter Elliott Jackson said, on X, that the club insisted that he hadn't been sacked, nor had he resigned.

Reports this morning may have finally provided a bit of clarity as to Dahl Tomasson's future with Blackburn, as he's been linked with taking an international managerial post.

Jon Dahl Tomasson is keen on becoming the next Sweden manager

Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has been linked with taking over the role of Sweden's national team manager. Alan Nixon said, via his Patreon account, that the boss is keen to leave Rovers after a poor run of form. This, combined with an inability to bring in the desired players, made the Swedish vacancy all the more appealing, as per Nixon.

Blackburn and Tomasson haven't officially parted ways, and this is what is currently stopping the Swedes from making him their next manager. Nixon added that Tomasson would be willing to leave the club for free, but that Blackburn had previously put a stop to that happening as they would want some form of compensation if he went on to get another managerial position.

Rovers have reportedly been drawing up a list of potential candidates so that they are ready to replace him when the time comes. The club are only five points above the relegation places, having narrowly missed out on a playoff spot last season.

Potential Dahl Tomasson exit could be a blessing in disguise for Blackburn

If you were to simply look at the league positions and the points from the 2022/23 campaign, it'd be easy to come to the conclusion that Rovers finishing on the same points as Sunderland, but missing out on the final playoff spot, was unfortunate. But a poor goal difference, which is what put them behind the Black Cats, can't be put down to bad luck; it's an ugly trait.

What's more baffling is that Blackburn have flipped what they're good at, and what they're not so good at, this season.

Last season their problem was that they struggled for goals, but they were adequate defensively. Now they are the worst defensive team in the league, having conceded more goals already than they did through all 46 games of the prior campaign, but they've only scored 10 fewer goals than they did last season, in 17 fewer games.

Looking at the cold hard stats, Tomasson hasn't shown that he can manage a team in the Championship and get them to a positive goal difference.

That record is going to get you nowhere fast, so his potential departure may offer up a fresh opportunity for Blackburn to try something different and see where it takes them.
