Former Chelsea club legend John Terry has given his opinion on Enzo Maresca saying they weren’t title challengers last season.

Terry’s opinion is one that I will always personally go to and appreciate hearing, because not only is he a true Chelsea legend and one of the best players to ever play for the club, he is also an out and out Chelsea fan and loves the club and works for the club now.

EXCLUSIVE! Enzo Maresca asks Chelsea to sign a new centre back!!

Last season, Blues manager Enzo Maresca played down their chances of winning the Premier League despite getting off to a good start to the campaign. He knew that his players were young and not ready yet, and he was not buying into the media hype that was going around at the time.

His comments received some criticism at the time from the media and from some fans, but Terry thinks he was right to play it down at that point.

Terry told The Sun this week:

“I really liked the honesty from the manager [Maresca] because the message is clear to the players. We’re not there yet.

“If you’re the manager now coming into that dressing room and you’re going, ‘We’ve got a chance this year’, the players will think we’ve got a chance. This year I think his message will be different.”

Maresca spot on

Terry went on to say:

“He [Maresca] was spot on because we were young, it was a little bit up and down last year. At the moment, we’re clearly building and moving in the right direction.

“I’m not sitting here saying I want to wait five years to win another Premier League. We’ve got to go into it 100 per cent with the mindset of going, ‘Yes, we have to try to win the league this year’.

“Without a shadow of a doubt. But there’s other big competitions as well. You fight right to the end until it’s not possible.”
