Manchester City are set to see Joao Cancelo join Bayern Munich on loan before the end of the January transfer window, according to emerging reports on Monday afternoon.

The Portugal international has fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, and has seen his minutes significantly limited at both left-back and right-back during the second-half of the season.

18 year-old defender Rico Lewis has excelled at right-back, while Nathan Ake has been seen as Guardiola’s first-choice option at left-back, leaving Joao Cancelo to watch on from the sidelines in almost all of City’s matches since the return of club football in recent weeks.

Now, according to a breaking report from The Athletic, the former Juventus and Valencia defender is set to make a move to Germany in the coming hours and days, joining Bayern Munich on a loan deal from the reigning Premier League champions.

That is according to the information of David Ornstein and Pol Ballus, who first wrote that Joao Cancelo is set to join the Bundesliga giants on loan, with a deal set to include a buy-option for the Manchester City defender.

That option to buy – as per reporting from Jack Gaughan of the Mail among others – is set to be at a €70 million fee.

It is further highlighted that the reigning Bundesliga champions are ‘long-term admirers’ of the 28 year-old full-back, but that it is ‘unclear’ why Manchester City are sanctioning a loan move for the player to a direct UEFA Champions League rival.

Additional updates from German media also state that Cancelo is already en-route to Munich to join Julian Nagelsmann’s side, with a medical scheduled for later today.

Manager Pep Guardiola has been adamant across the course of recent interviews and press conferences that there would be no major arrivals into his first-team squad, and as per Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News, City feel they have enough cover in their squad even without the presence of Cancelo.

Rico Lewis’ emergence into the City first-team squad in recent weeks has even seen the experienced Kyle Walker limited to substitute appearances in a large number of the club’s recent matches, and the teenager is only expected to excel further within the squad during the remainder of the season.

Elsewhere, City are understood to have a buy-back clause on Sporting’s Pedro Porro – with the Spain international at the centre of a transfer saga involving Tottenham and a €45 million fee.

However, that clause is unlikely to be activated at this stage, and Manchester City are only expected to take home their sell-on percentage should Porro move from Portugal in the coming days – which is understood to be 30% of anything over the initial €8.5 million to €8.8 million that they sold him for last summer.
