Javi Martínez has defended Bayern Munich after they faced criticism for not spending as much as their European rivals during the summer transfer window.
Leon Goretzka was their only addition to the first team squad – on a free transfer from Schalke – with Vancouver Whitecaps sensation Alphonso Davies expected to join in January.
However, Martínez believes the Bayern will not buy for the sake of buying as they look to challenge under Niko Kovač.
“Every club has its philosophy,” he told kicker. “Ours is just different to that of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, but that does not mean that one is better than the other.
“If you compare our squad with the other big clubs, we do not have to envy anyone. A transfer must always make sense for the club. Spending only money to present a big name makes no sense.
“Who are we going to pick? Who is really better than the one we have? For me at the very most Messi, who is in my opinion the best player of all time. But that’s impossible, of course.”
