Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Derby County captain Jason Knight.

The Times reported that the Magpies are looking to take advantage of Derby’s financial situation by signing their promising Irish international.

The midfielder has been a standout performer in a Derby side that is fighting against relegation to League One.

The reported figure of £8 million is no barrier for cash-rich Newcastle, who are looking to spend big in a bid to avoid relegation of their own under their new owners.

Is it a good potential move?

Knight is ready for the step up to Premier League level

. It would be a huge loss for Derby if he were to leave mid-season, but Knight is more than capable of making the step up to the top flight.

The 20-year old has been a pivotal figure in keeping Derby even close to avoiding relegation this season.

This would be a great move for Newcastle, especially given the lack of available talent at a reasonable price this January.

For only £8 million, this move could end up looking like a real bargain if the club can land their man.

Would he start?

Knight would be a certain upgrade on Newcastle’s existing midfield options.

His competition would be against the likes of Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and fellow Irish international Jeff Hendrick.

Up against those players, Knight is a clear improvement.

At only 20-years old, he still has plenty of time to develop into an even greater player under the management of Eddie Howe.

Howe should take quite the liking to Knight, who will suit the style of play that we saw his Bournemouth side play when they were in the Premier League.

What does he offer?

Knight is comfortable in possession, is able to pick out a pass. He can carry the ball forward well and knows when to release it to a teammate.

He also possesses great energy, he will run his socks off for a full 90-minutes, winning the ball back, getting up the pitch into good attacking positions and giving everything he can for the team.

Whether it has been playing for Derby or for Ireland, he has always been a key figure already in his career. That he was made club captain at such a young age should tell you everything you need to know about Knight’s determination and will to win.
