Ivory Coast got their AFCON campaign off to the perfect start as Max-Alain Gradel’s early strike saw them bear Equatorial Guinea.

Cote d’Ivoire got off to the perfect start as Max-Alain Gradel latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the area and fired in a superb first-time effort into the top right-hand corner.

Equatorial Guinea tried to push for an equaliser and went close on 37 minutes when Basilio Ndong stung the palms of Badra Sangaré with a low drive across the box.

Into the second half and Guinea really should have levelled things up on 65 minutes only for Emilio Nsue to fluff his lines and strike right at the goalkeeper when through one-on-one.

The Elephants held on though as they topped Group E with the three points.
