Chris Wood had a completely forgettable spell at Portman Road back in 2015

In total, Chris Wood has featured for nine different clubs in the Football League during his career, although not each move has garnered success.

The New Zealand international is currently plying his trade in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, which marks an eight straight season in the top flight since joining Burnley in the 2017/18 campaign.

With a spell at Newcastle United in between, the frontman has been a regular goal-getter against the top sides in the country in recent years, so it is easy to forget his earlier stints in the EFL as he got his career underway.

West Brom, Barnsley, Brighton and Bristol City can all also claim to have had the Kiwi on their books at some point in his career, but an eight-game spell at Portman Road back in 2015 isn’t one that immediately springs to mind.

Chris Wood’s forgettable Ipswich Town spell

Wood was a Leicester City player at the time when the move to East Anglia came about, with the 2014/15 campaign proving to be a year of ups and downs for the forward.

After finding a late equaliser for the Foxes in a 2-2 draw with Everton on the first day of the Premier League season, the striker would struggle to get into the side throughout the campaign, with Leonardo Ulloa, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez calling the shots in the final third.

While City were trying to fight relegation, Wood was still not getting a look in, and having not played since the start of January 2015, Ipswich Town offered him an escape route with a stint back in the Football League.

Mick McCarthy was in the midst of a playoff push in Suffolk at the time, with the goals of Daryl Murphy firing Town towards the top of the table, with Wood brought in to offer experience and competition in the attacking department.

But try as he might, the New Zealander struggled to get to grips with life at Portman Road, with a late substitute appearance in the 2-0 East Anglia Derby defeat to Norwich City a sign of what was to come.

In total, Wood featured on the winning side just once out of his eight appearances in blue, although he had already been substituted when Richard Chaplow netted a 90th minute winner to secure a 1-0 win against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Chris Wood gets Leicester City recall before the season ends at Ipswich Town

With the playoffs on the horizon, McCarthy would have wanted Wood to stay and be part of his squad for the end of season lottery, even if he hadn’t quite found his goalscoring touch at Portman Road.

But with just one week left of the regular campaign, Leicester recalled Wood for the final few weeks of the Premier League campaign, citing the fact that they may need the frontman for the final few matches as they fought to escape relegation.

But in reality, the striker never played another minute of football after heading back to the King Power Stadium, as City secured safety, before going on to win the Premier League title just 12 months later.

But Wood was long gone by then, with Leeds United becoming the ninth side of his career in the summer of 2015, as the memories of Portman Road were put well in the past.
