Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Thierry Henry has criticized Real Madrid’s approach towards Bernardo Silva’s free-kick goal during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

The legendary forward has said that you cannot put just one player on the wall especially then when City have two players lined up to take the free-kick.

“Let’s talk about the Bernardo goal. You can’t put one player on the wall when City have two guys over a freekick,” said Henry during a chat on CBS Sports (h/t Madrid Xtra).

“You open the space. Vinicius Jr moved. If you hit the target it will be a goal,” he added.

Henry also said that Andriy Lunin was not at fault for the goal because there was a lot of space for Bernardo to exploit.

“Lunin should save? Once the ball hits the ground, it’s bye-bye. You’re watching it in slow-motion,” he explained.

How did the goal pan out?

During the opening minute of the match, Aurelien Tchouameni conceded a free-kick by committing a sliding tackle that brought down Jack Grealish.

Bernardo stepped up to take charge and managed to slide a low shot into the near post from a distance.

Although Lunin attempted to save the ball with his hand, it still went in, giving Cityzens the lead in less than two minutes.

Remarkably, Bernardo’s goal, after 108 seconds, ranks as the second-earliest goal scored by an away team against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the UEFA Champions League, with only Mario Mandzukic for Juventus netting earlier than that, back in April 2018.

As for the match, Real Madrid had to overcome the deficit twice. First after Bernardo had opened the scoring and second after Josko Gvardiol scored a screamer in the 71st minute.

With the game now tied at 3-3, the ball is now in Manchester City’s court as the second leg is scheduled at the Etihad.
