Manchester United forward Alessia Russo says that scoring a hat-trick for England is an unbelievable feeling.

The 22-year-old came off the bench to score an 11-minute treble in a record 20-0 victory for the Lionesses against Latvia in Doncaster last night.

It was Russo’s first England outing in 20 months and when speaking in the post-match press conference, the player admitted that she was delighted both to get long-awaited minutes and find the back of the net.

“I was just so excited to get back on the pitch after so long and represent the Lionesses,” Russo said.

“As a striker, you always hope to score so to be able to go home with a match ball is an unbelievable feeling.”

Russo came off the bench after watching Beth Mead and Ellen White bag hat-tricks and Lauren Hemp score the first two of her four goals. Despite the fact that her fellow forwards had produced the goods prior to her arrival, Russo said that she didn’t feel any pressure to do the same.

She added “I didn’t feel any pressure to score. Like I said, as a striker, you are always trying to get on the scoresheet and help to assist and create for the team.

“The performance and the win is the most important thing for all of us. I don’t look to get on the scoresheet but it is a great feeling when it does happen.”

England remain top of their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualification group with six wins from six games.
