West Ham United defender Anouk Denton says that carrying over momentum from last season is key to the team’s success this term.

The Hammers finished in ninth position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table in 2024/2025. Rehanne Skinner’s side enjoyed a period of significant progress and their performances were so often a joy to watch.

West Ham United have set high standards under head coach Skinner and defender Denton says that carrying on from where they left off will be really important if the team are to progress again this season.

“We need to definitely continue on from how we finished last season,” Denton said. “It’s about building momentum because once we started getting wins, they kept coming. If we can start the season strong and get some wins then the momentum will come.

“It comes down to how connected and strong we are as a team; the connections with each other. Pre-season is important for building those connections so that we can come into the season really strong.”

West Ham United have a tough start with local derbies against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea all coming in the opening month, along with a challenging game against Brighton & Hove Albion. The East Londoners go into the new season with the most settled squad that they’ve had for several seasons and Denton believes that this will help with carrying on that momentum.

She said “One hundred percent, it definitely helps because it takes a while to learn how others play around you and to get to know your teammates on the pitch. It helps having a core number of players that have stayed.

“Everyone knows that it’s a big derby against Tottenham in the first game. Every player will be up for that game, even the new players who haven’t experienced it before.”

West Ham United took points from Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United in the second half of last season and Denton says that the team believe that they can get a result against anyone on their day.

She said “Every game is a game that you can get points from. Even against the top teams, we go into those games wanting three points and we showed last year that we can get points against the top teams.

“If we don’t get points from them [opening games] it’s good to build on performances but we want to get points.”

West Ham United kick-off the new season at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 7 September 2025. Season tickets covering the club’s home fixtures are on-sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
