Defender Alessandro Bastoni has been named as Inter Milan’s best player in the team’s Serie A rout of Salernitana.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, lauded the 24-year-old for his influence on the Nerazzurri’s dominant attack.

Defensively Bastoni did not have the toughest of evenings yesterday at the San Siro.

The Italian international did have to keep track of veteran former Inter and Lazio winger Antonio Candreva, as well as wingback Junior Sambia.

And in that respect, Bastoni was essentially flawless.

The Inter defender used his pace, skill, and anticipation to keep Inter’s left flank quiet defensively speaking.

But it was at the other end of the pitch that Bastoni really shone.

Bastoni got involved in the attack early on. The 24-year-old tested Salernitana goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa early on with a header.

And then Bastoni’s passing was integral to how Inter attacked throughout the match.

The Nerazzurri pushed forward very aggressively. They aimed to pen the Granata back and create strong numerical overloads all over the pitch.

So in this respect, Bastoni had to fill the roles of midfielder and even attacking winger at times.

And the 24-year-old showed all his range of passing from these positions.

Bastoni formed a strong connection with Carlos Augusto on the Nerazzurri’s left flank. And it was his pinpoint long ball to fellow Italian international Nicolo Barella that saw the latter test Ochoa from an excellent position.

Bastoni got a rest during the closing stages of the match. Tajon Buchanan came on at left-wingback, and then Carlos Augusto slotted back into Bastoni’s centre-back role in the back three.

But in his time on the pitch, Bastoni more than had his share of influence.

For the Gazzetta, the 24-year-old’s performance was worthy of a 7.5/10 score.
