Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella has emerged as an important leadership figure at the Nerazzurri since joining from Cagliari in the summer of 2019.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who note how much the 25-year-old has grown as he prepares to return to his boyhood club in tomorrow’s Serie A clash.

Barella arrived at Inter as a player of undoubted talent, having established himself as one of the most promising midfielders in Italian football with his performances for Cagliari in the top flight.

However, he had yet to show that he could really be at the centre of a top-level project such as Inter’s, having shone as a younger player for the Rossoblu.

Season on season, however, Barella has grown not just in technical quality but also in stature as a leader in the team’s aspirations.

The midfielder was handed a new deal until the end of June 2026 to show the club’s commitment to him as a pillar of their future, and has even been tipped as one of the main candidates to inherit the captain’s armband from Samir Handanovic.
