Referee Livio Marinelli hardly got anything wrong in Inter’s win over Venezia yesterday in spite of needing the assistance of VAR to spot a late penalty for the Nerazzurri.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazette dello Sport, who brand the official’s display to have been “almost perfect” in the Serie A clash.

The match in Venice had no major refereeing talking points as the Nerazzurri wrapped up three important points without much incident or bad temper from either sets of players.

This smoothness of proceedings owed partly to the confident and well-paced display by Marinelli, who kept things moving and only had to go to his pocket a couple of times.

The one real incident came only moments before the end, when the VAR intervened to award Inter a penalty for a handball by Venezia defender Ridgeciano Haps in the box.

Marinelli had not spotted it, but the VAR Massimiliano Irrati advised him to have another look at the incident on the pitchside monitor and he quickly decided to award the spot kick.

Lautaro Martinez duly converted the penalty to finally put the match beyond the home side, and in the end the official got no major decisions wrong.
