Inter could have been given a penalty for a handball by Lecce midfielder Morten Hjulmand in the eyes of Italian media.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that match official Gianluca Mangianello handled the match in a very “Premier League style” way, letting everything go, but that there was certainly a case for a Nerazzurri penalty.

Inter had a few penalty appeals waved away, and in the view of the Gazzetta, the ones for contact inside the penalty area were not particularly credible shouts for a spot kick, although they may have warranted a second look.

In the view of the newspaper, the tackles made by Alessandro Tuia and Valentin Gendrey on Lautaro Martinez and Robin Gosens respectively were not penalties due to the Lecce players having won the ball before catching their opponents.

These decisions were in line with the overall tone that was set by Mangianello throughout the contest, who did not brandish a single yellow card even if some physical challenges by Lecce midfielder Youssef Maleh in particular could have warranted one.

However, the Gazzetta argue that the contact that midfielder Hjulmand made on a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick with his arm would have been worth a penalty, as it looked to be a voluntary motion by the 23-year-old Dane.
