Jamie Carragher says he has concerns about the balance of the Liverpool team following their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.
The Reds were beaten on penalties at Wembley following a 2-2 draw, with goals from new strikers Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong being cancelled out by a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty and late strike from Ismaila Sarr.
And speaking at a Sky Sports launch event ahead of the new season, former Liverpool defender Carragher says he does not think Arne Slot’s side are necessarily title favourites.
“I think we will have a title race,” Carragher said.
“And I think there’s a lot of talk, you know, obviously because Liverpool won the league comfortably (last season), and then they look like they’re going to spend, what, three, four hundred million.
“I think the great thing about football is what we actually saw on Sunday with Liverpool. It didn’t look right. They deservedly lost. They probably should have lost the game, I think, in normal time when I watched it, and it just tells me it’s not just about spending lots of money and buying the best players.
“You’ve still got to sort of manage that team and make it work and have a nice balance to it.
“And I just thought, you know, looking at that, I think there’s a lot of work for Slot to do, probably this week, going into the weekend’s games.”
Liverpool have already spent around £300m this summer, signing Florian Wirtz, Ekitike, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Their spending is likely not finished, however, with Slot keen to add to his central defensive options while the club are also weighing up whether to go back in with another bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
“I don’t get this narrative of Liverpool are going to win the league, or if they sign this player, the league’s over,” Carragher continued.
“History tells you that. It’s not just about having the best players, it’s having the best team and sort of making that balance right.
“And at the weekend, it didn’t quite look right.”
