You couldn’t escape the Istanbul references during the build-up to Liverpool v Milan in the Champions League this week.

And  the first half at Anfield has produced some exhilarating football, as well as the ghosts of 2005 coming back to make themselves known.

Firstly, the home side have had to deal with a taste of their own medicine because despite taking the lead and dominating the game for the majority of the opening 45 minutes they have been pegged back.

Sounds familiar, right?

Not only that but Mohamed Salah was denied from the penalty spot by an inspired Mike Maignan, and in doing so has achieved a feat for Milan that hasn’t been seen since the 2005 final itself.

History has a way of repeating itself.
