Wout Weghorst has experienced a successful career so far, having played for nine different clubs in four different countries. The 31-year-old striker is regularly included in the Netherlands national team, but this week, one big question has been circulating in the Dutch media: Is Wout Weghorst good enough for the Netherlands national team?

On Monday night, Weghorst started for his country in their Euro qualifier against Greece. The former Burnley and Manchester United man showed his skills in the striker position, but he was unable to score a goal in his side’s 1-0 win. Weghorst saw his early penalty land comfortably into the gloves of Odysseas Vlachodimos and after the hour mark he was replaced by Brian Brobbey.

In total, Weghorst has scored seven goals in 27 national team appearances. The Hoffenheim striker has been relied on a lot over the last year, but there is an argument that he isn’t quite cutting it for the national team. The Netherlands have a big striker problem at the moment, as Wout Weghorst, Brian Brobbey and Donyell Malen are really the only available out-and-out strikers. Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo can fill the role when fit, but would they be capable of scoring the goals required to make the Netherlands a powerhouse in world football again?

The most in-form Dutch striker at the moment is Luuk de Jong. The 32-year-old has scored seven goals and provided five assists in eight Eredivisie appearances. Unfortunately for Ronald Koeman, De Jong announced his retirement from the national team in March. The Netherlands take on Ireland on Wednesday night before heading to Gibraltar. It’s important that they pick up the points required in these next two games to secure qualification for Euro 2024.
