Is Emmanuel Macron the new Paul the Octopus after nailing France predictions?

Speaking with Le Parisien this weekend French president Emmanuel Macron gave his predictions ahead of France’s last 16 tie with Poland at the World Cup in Qatar, all of which proved to be accurate.

Macron, who has indicated that he will travel to Qatar should Les Bleus reach the semi-finals, predicted France would win 3-1 before saying: “[Robert] Lewandowski will score one, just like [Kylian] Mbappé or maybe [Olivier] Giroud, who wants to make history.”

All of those predictions came true during the game. France did indeed win 3-1 in Doha, despite a tricky first half against a more expansive Poland than had been seen in the group stages. Meanwhile, both Mbappé and Giroud scored, as Giroud became France’s all-time leading goalscorer, passing Thierry Henry’s tally of 51 goals for Les Bleus.

Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty, which had to be retaken due to encroachment, proved to be a consolation for Poland after two powerful Mbappé finishes late on but it also meant all four of the French president’s predictions were, incredibly, realised.

Could Macron become the successor to Paul the Octopus? Paul famously accurately predicted several results during the 2010 World Cup by choosing food from one of two boxes baring flags of competing teams.
