Ipswich Town midfielder Sam Morsy has admitted that the club’s players have not been good enough, following the sacking of manager Paul Cook.

Morsy, who previously won promotion from League One under Cook at Wigan, was one of 19 new senior players signed by Ipswich in the summer, making the drop down from the Championship with Middlesbrough to move to Portman Road.

But despite that overhaul, Ipswich have been unable to mount an automatic promotion push this season, with the Tractor Boys currently 11th in the third-tier standings, seven points adrift of the play-offs.

That stop start league campaign, coupled with an underwhelming goalless draw with League Two strugglers Barrow in the FA Cup on Saturday, has now cost Cook his job at Portman Road.

It was announced after that cup stalemate that Cook has left Ipswich, and it now seems as though Morsy has been left feeling somewhat responsible for the 54-year-old’s departure.

Ipswich and Morsy are set to begin life without Cook on Tuesday night, when they make the trip to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic.

You can’t help but wonder what Morsy must be thinking right now.

He gave up Championship football to join Ipswich on a long-term contract in the summer, and you imagine his past connections with Cook will have had a big part to play in that.

However, Cook is now gone just a few months later, meaning Morsy may well be feeling somewhat uncertain about his own position at Portman Road moving forward.

It will be interesting therefore, to see just how the midfielder and his teammates respond on the pitch, given there is still plenty of time in the season for them to turn things round in the promotion race.
