Ipswich Town securing back-to-back promotions will have blown away the majority of football fans.
Even the most optimistic Town supporter couldn’t have predicted their club going from a mid-table finish in League One to the promised land of the sport in just two years.
This rise to success for Ipswich will likely come at the expense of some players though, who won’t be kept around for this top-flight season, and forward Kayden Jackson is a likely candidate to depart.
Jackson has been an Ipswich player for over half of a decade now after joining them from Accrington Stanley in 2018.
He has played for Town in both League One and the Championship and now the Premier League beckons for him and the club.
Despite this extended relationship between the two, Jackson hasn’t always been a regular starter in the Ipswich frontline.
This became particularly apparent last season. In many ways, he was a victim of his team’s success.
38 league appearances in 2022/23 was his best return for the club, whilst 11 goals and seven assists was his best record in front of goal, this coming in the 2019/20 season.
Both of these campaigns were in League One and last year, he was largely reduced to watching on from the sidelines.
The likelihood of him playing in the Premier League, especially if Ipswich dip into the transfer market as expected, is slight, to say the least. Adding into the equation the matter of his contract, which has now come to an end and surely won’t be renewed by Ipswich, then a move back down to the Championship is the most suitable course of action for all concerned.
Plymouth Argyle targeting a Premier League player on a permanent deal isn’t commonplace and so the aforementioned contract situation surrounding Jackson would play a major role were they to target him.
Aside from spending seven figures on both Morgan Whittaker and Bali Mumba, the Devonshire rarely splash the cash and free transfers have been the preferred scenario at Home Park.
Jackson is a 30-year-old, established EFL forward who should be capable of hitting the ground running for the Pilgrims.
Ryan Hardie is the starting striker for Argyle and has been for a few years since his move from Blackpool, but his struggles in front of goal last year coincided with the team’s issues both on and off of the field.
Providing an alternative option to the Scotsman is integral in the Greens’ hopes of avoiding relegation. Mustapha Bundu is a solid player but picked up on an injury in the final-day win over Hull City whilst Ben Waine is best suited to a loan move this summer.
Jackson fits the bill perfectly, as a physical yet mobile attacker that would offer cover and competition for Hardie.
It seems safe to assume that Jackson is surplus to requirements for Kieran McKenna and that could create the perfect opening for Argyle.
