Simone Inzaghi hails Marcus Thuram’s ‘mentality and hunger’ in this sparkling start to the Inter season after a 4-0 victory over Atalanta at San Siro.
The Nerazzurri put on a show of force when thrashing La Dea 4-0 at San Siro with Marcus Thuram bagging a brace – plus a deflection off Berat Djimsiti – and a spectacular Nicolò Barella volley from the edge of the area.
“The lads did very well, especially the opening half-hour, then it was inevitable we’d sit a bit deeper towards the end,” Inzaghi told DAZN.
“Beating Atalanta like this is very satisfying. I saw four days of very intense training and today it all paid off, so I congratulate the players.”
There could’ve been comfortably more goals for Inter, but they seemed a little too determined to pass it to teammates or attempt a bit of magic rather than be clinical, especially Marko Arnautovic in stoppages.
“Let us not forget we were up against a very good team. The lads showed great concentration, we allowed Atalanta very little,” continued the coach.
Although Lautaro Martinez returned to the line-up after a muscular injury, Thuram has been the standout performer of the season so far.
“Thuram is starting to get more experience in Serie A and is building on last season. It all starts from his mentality and his hunger, he returned to the training ground early from vacation because he knew that we needed him.
“The strikers are all doing well, I liked Taremi and Arnautovic when they came on too. We’ve got to keep the bar high and we did.”
There were reports that both Hakan Calhanoglu and Alessandro Bastoni went off with minor injury concerns, so those will require more tests.
Inter won the Scudetto last season, so can they really improve upon that?
“We’ve got to work every day to keep raising the bar. Our competitors have made huge investments and reinforced a great deal, but we are going to push to the end,” concluded Inzaghi.
