Harry Kane made history as England beat Italy 2-1 in UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying in Naples on Thursday evening.
The skipper led by example all night, provided the assist for Declan Rice's opener on six minutes and then wrote his name in English football folklore a minute before half-time.
In a carbon copy of Rice's goal, Harry was ready to meet Bukayo Saka's corner at the far post, only for Giovanni Di Lorenzo to handle. Referee Srdjan Jovanović awarded the penalty after reviewing on VAR and Harry made no mistake, burying the spot-kick as Gianluigi Donnarumma dived the other way.
That made it 54 goals in 81 caps for Harry, taking him above Wayne Rooney as England's all-time record goalscorer.
As expected, Italy responded in the second half and pulled an early goal back through Mateo Retegui. England were then reduced to 10 men following two quickfire yellow cards to Luke Shaw with 10 minutes remaining. However, Harry led the line superbly to help take the pressure off and Gareth Southgate's men held on for a first win against the Azzurri in Italy since 1961. The matchwinner that night? Jimmy Greaves...
Eric Dier and Fraser Forster were unused substitutes at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Elsewhere, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg earned his 64th cap and played the full 90 minutes as Denmark beat Finland 3-1 in UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying Group H. Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta scored a hat-trick.
Maksim Paskotsi also played a full shift as Estonia lost 1-0 in a friendly against Hungary at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
