“Inter, only Inter” – One of Europe’s top strikers still not on the menu for Chelsea

Lautaro Martinez banging in 4 goals for Inter Milan last night, making Chelsea fans wonder once again why they hadn’t made a huge effort to sign him in the summer.

The money we spent on a host of other players could surely have been better used securing Martinez, one of the top players in the world in that position.

But it might not have bene as easy as we hoped. Indeed, Caughtoffside today report on quotes from the Argentina international’s agent which say that he’s not interested in leaving his current club.

“Saudi Arabia is a market full of temptations, and Lautaro received many proposals but not only from there. But Whenever I tell him about these possibilities, he says ‘Inter, only Inter’,” Martinez’ agent Alejandro Camano said.

“The affinity he shares with the fans and the club is incredible. The sense of belonging to the project and the group is important.

“Lautaro didn’t listen to any club other than Inter. He’s with the Nerazzurri now because he loves the club and the team.

“This summer the whole world talked about the possible transfer to another club, but in reality, he has decided to stay because he enjoys the tranquillity and considers Inter as his home. Lautaro is happy, he’s the captain of the team, and he is also expecting a child. So we have to work to make sure he remains happy.”

We wonder if he would have said the same thing had a €100m offer from Chelsea come in in July?

Once again, it seems like a real strategic failure by Chelsea’s transfer team that a top tier goalscorer wasn’t targeted, given that’s been the team’s main problem for a number of years.
