Inter Milan showed signs of a “superiority complex” in their first Serie A match of the season against Genoa.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter knew full well that the pressure was on them to get a win in their first Serie A match of the season.

The Nerazzurri went into the campaign as reigning champions for the first time since 2021. But everything went back to zero at the start of their title defense.

And Inter had to travel to a Liguria for a fixture that has been tough for them in recent years. They have not beaten Genoa away at the Marassi since 2020.

Once again, though, the away match against the Grifone proved perilous for Inter.

Inter did dominate in many facets of the game against Genoa.

The Nerazzurri enjoyed more than two thirds of possession throughout the match. This certainly allowed them to keep the Grifone goal under a reasonable amount of threat.

And it was not hard to see that Inter were the side with the greater technical quality in their ranks.

However, the Gazzetta argue that this almost worked against the Nerazzurri.

Inter were the team who had the clear initiative. And at times it looked as though they had little idea what to do with it.

Inter probed steadily in the hopes that the goals would come.

Genoa, on the other hand, looked like the team with the clearer gameplan.

The Grifone knew that they could not truly outplay Inter on a technical level.

But Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino got his tactics spot-on. Particularly in midfield, the Ligurian team made life exactly as difficult for Inter as they wanted to.

The result was that Genoa, yet again, earned a point at home against Inter.

And the Nerazzurri returned to Milan with a sense of frustration that they couldn’t turn their “superiority” into something more tangible.
