Stefan de Vrij believes Inter Milan have to target the Serie A title even if their rivals have become stronger.
The Dutchman spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews. He also gave his thoughts on his future.
This season, Inter have undeniably started out with the tag of favourites for the Serie A title.
That is inevitable after last campaign. The Nerazzurri did not just win the title last time out – they did so in utterly dominant fashion, with a gap of nearly twenty points separating them from second in the table.
But the start of this season has quickly made clear that it is not going to be normal service resumed for Inter.
The Nerazzurri are certainly one of the main teams in the title race, certainly.
But Inter find themselves two points behind Napoli at the moment. And then Juventus are nipping at their heels, while AC Milan are not too far behind despite an erratic start.
The key to why Napoli, Juventus, and Milan are all managing to push Inter much harder than they did last season is not hard to understand.
Whilst Inter focused on consolidating last season’s team during the summer, their rivals used the transfer window as an opportunity to make big changes.
As far as the toughest rival for the title, the Dutchman said that “I don’t like to talk in those terms.”
“I look around and I see that the other teams have all strengthened,” he added.
But de Vrij made clear that “We focus on ourselves, and think about winning all our matches.”
“The goal for us remains to win the title,” he said.
And as far his future, de Vrij said “I look at it one step at a time.”
