Napoli Sporting Director Giovanni Manna says that Inter Milan target Alex Meret “wants to stay” and is confident about contract negotiations.
The executive spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of this team’s Serie A clash with Genoa today.
Inter have reportedly been keeping an eye on the contract situation of Italian international keeper Meret.
The 27-year-old’s current deal with Napoli runs out at the end of June of next year.
And there are few clubs as attentive to free transfer opportunities as Inter. Particularly since the arrival of Beppe Marotta.
Inter have signed all of Stefan de Vrij, Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, and Marcus Thuram on free transfers in recent years.
This past summer alone, both Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski arrived via that route. The latter from Napoli, following the failure of contract negotiations with the Partenopei.
And Inter have sensed a potential opportunity to sign another high-profile player from Napoli, in the form of Meret.
Napoli have been working to avoid losing Meret, however. They have been in talks with the 27-year-old and his representatives to try and agree a contract extension.
And the club’s Sporting Director Manna stated that “We’re working to find an agreement on a contract extension.”
“We’re confident and optimistic,” he went on, meanwhile.
“We have the desire to continue together. And the player himself wants to stay at Napoli.”
“There’s a feeling of harmony between us,” Mann added. “It’s a love that’s grown as we’ve gone forward together.”
Meret joined Napoli from Udinese in the summer of 2018.
The Italian international was the starting keeper for the Partenopei as they won the Serie A title during the 2022-23 season. And he has continued to hold down his role under Antonio Conte.
