Inter Milan kept the “nightmare” of Juventus catching up in the Serie A table at bay with a tidy win away to Monza.

This is the assessment in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

On the pitch yesterday, Inter were facing Monza.

But the wider context could not have been too far from Nerazzurri minds. The title race between Inter and Juventus is now the overarching backdrop every time either of the two sides play in Serie A.

Last week, there had been evident tension in both teams’ performances.

Inter needed a wild late conclusion to beat Hellas Verona in a match that had seen the Nerazzurri look some way from their best. Not the most convincing display of title credentials.

And then the Bianconeri also needed a stoppage time winner to beat Salernitana, having thesmelves looked nowhere near Serie A champions.

Yesterday against Monza, on the other hand, it was a different story for Inter.

The Nerazzurri had extra motivation to take three points from Brianza, if such a thing is possible.

Since Inter will miss a Serie A match next weekend whilst they are in Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana, Juventus will have a chance to go ahead of them in the table.

The Nerazzurri would have a game in hand. But the psychological impact could still be very much there.

And it would be all the worse if Inter were to have dropped points yesterday.

That would have given the Bianconeri the chance to catch up, or even overtake, Inter in the table as early as Tuesday. Then build a further lead next weekend.

But Inter made sure that did not happen.

There was no sign of the “nightmare” of the title race with Juventus weighing too much on the Bianconeri. At least not yet.
