Inter Milan & Juventus In Favour Of Scaling Back Supercoppa Italiana To One-Off Match | OneFootball

Inter Milan and Juventus are both in favour of scaling back the Supercoppa Italiana to a one-off match starting next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri will vote for a change in format on Friday.

On Friday of this week, the Lega Serie A assembly will meet.

As part of the meeting, the clubs will consider the format of the Supercoppa Italiana for next season.

And according to La Repubblica, Inter and Juventus are ready to vote to change things back after the format had expanded this season.

Inter & Juventus In Favour Of Scaling Back Supercoppa Italiana

In the past, the Supercoppa has normally been a one-off match.

The competition has been contested between the previous team’s Serie A winners, and Supercoppa Italiana winners.

Then, should one team have won both competitions the prior campaign, the beaten Coppa Italia finalists would appear in the Supercoppa.

This time around, things were a bit different though.

The competition expanded to a four-team mini-tournament similar to the Spanish Super Cup.

This meant that there were places for all of the Serie A winners and runners-up, and both finalists from the Coppa Italia.

This season, Inter beat Lazio and Napoli to win the Supercoppa. Fiorentina also participated as last season’s beaten Coppa Italia finalists.

According to La Repubblica, both Inter and Juventus favour scaling the Supercoppa back, however.

The two clubs see the fixture list as already growing to a degree that is placing excessive demands on teams.

This includes an expansion of the Champions League. Then, there is the expanded Club World Cup next season. Both of the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri will be participating.

Therefore, both clubs do not want the Supercoppa to be an expanded mini-tournament next season.
