Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi reportedly considering resting Lautaro Martinez in Wednesday’s game against Empoli.
According to Corriere della Sera, as reported by FCInterNews, Inzaghi is desperate for his standout forward to return to his usual best.
However, he could still leave the 27-year-old on the bench tomorrow.
With the distraction of the Ballon d’Or out of the way, Lautaro Martinez can focus on helping Inter overcome a sluggish league start.
Inzaghi’s side lost further ground on Antonio Conte’s Napoli side last weekend following a 4-4 home draw against Juventus.
Dropping a two-goal cushion inside the final ten minutes saw the Nerazzurri fall four points behind the league leaders.
Therefore, a win at Stadio Carlo Castellani is imperative, as Inter can’t afford another slip-up.
Indeed, Inzaghi’s men may have a perfect chance to reduce the distance, with Napoli taking on AC Milan at Stadio San Siro.
But Martinez may not be in the starting line-up.
Martinez failed to score against Juventus, marking his sixth scoreless Serie A appearance in eight this season.
However, he was decisive on Inter’s last league travel, riffling home a second-half winner against Roma.
Interestingly, the Argentine superstar’s three top-flight goals this season have all come away from home.
That doesn’t seem to be of interest to Inzaghi.
By contrast, the Inter manager could field Mehdi Taremi at Martinez’s expense tomorrow.
The Iranian ace has yet to score in Serie A this term.
But he has fared well in the UEFA Champions League, showing Inzaghi that he can count on him.
If given a chance to start at Empoli, Taremi should better deliver, with a margin for error reduced to a minimum.
As for Martinez, he must shrug off the pressure and frustration if he’s to return to form.
