Yesterday evening, Inter welcomed Atletico Madrid to the San Siro.

The two European giants played out a Champions League round of sixteen first leg in front of a packed house.

It was little surprise that the stadium was a sell-out. Even in most league matches, the San Siro tends to either fill up or get very close to it when Inter player there.

And the sense of occasion was all the higher up against a formidable Atletico team, with a place in the last eight of Europe’s top club competition at stake.

Reports before the match suggested that it would end up being Inter’s second-highest earning match in the club’s history in terms of gate receipts.

There was never any chance of equalling the Champions League semifinal second leg against AC Milan last season.

That match had seen Inter earn around €12.5 million from gate receipts alone. It was a hugely significant derby match, a once-in-a-generation fixture that prompted almost unheard-of demand.

But yesterday’s match commanded an impressive gate receipt all the same.

With Inter having reached the Champions League final last season, anticipation was high for yesterday’s match.

The Nerazzurri are also in blazing form at the top of the Serie A table. That is also a factor in creating a positive atmosphere around the team.

And so the prices for many tickets for yesterday’s match was high to meet demand.

Expectations before the match were for a gate receipt in excess of €9 million.

And the Gazzetta report that the match indeed met those expectations.

According to the newspaper, the total gate receipt earnings for the Nerazzurri were €9,218,859.
