Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi isn’t too keen to rush to direct comparisons between Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Thuram.

Speaking in a press conference after today’s 5-1 Serie A win over AC Milan, as reported by FCInterNews, the coach played down comparisons between the former and current Nerazzurri strikers.

Inter’s summer transfer window was one of upheaval. But particularly in attack.

The Nerazzurri lost three strikers in the form of Edin Dzeko, Joaquin Correa, and arguably most significantly of all, Lukaku.

It had always looked as though Inter would do everything they could to bring the Belgian back this summer. But his relationship with the club soured after a dramatic soap opera.

In the end, Lukaku joined Roma instead in the final days of the transfer window.

But coming the other way was Thuram.

The Frenchman arrived on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach. And he has started every one of Inter’s Serie A matches so far this season.

And Thuram has gotten off to a flying start, scoring two goals and assisting an additional one.

Inter Coach Inzaghi Plays Down Lukaku Thuram Comparisons

Of whether Thuram can become even better than Lukaku, Inzaghi said that “Time will tell.”

“The most important thing is that he keep going like this,” the Nerazzurri coach continued.

Inzaghi called the win over Milan “The sign of strength that I wanted.”

He went on that “Winning five consecutive derbies is something that hasn’t happened in a long time [ed. It has never happened before].”

“I’m happy for the whole Inter family, this is an important result. But we’re still only on the fourth match of the season.”

“Now comes the difficult part,” Inzaghi added.

“We have to interpret the rest of the matches well, as we’ve done in these first four.”

“Now we have to introduce the new players at the right time,” the coach noted.

“Pavard is a very high-level player, Sanchez has returned in the perfect way. He needed to play, like Klaassen.”

“We know that we’ve made big changes, everyone’s time will come.”

Federico Dimarco’s Injury Not Serious

Inzaghi also updated on the fitness of wingback Federico Dimarco.

The 25-year-old came off the pitch just after the hour-mark. Carlos Augusto replaced him on the Nerazzurri’s left flank.

Dimarco had pulled up with some cramp before coming off, though there was perhaps a hint that it could’ve been something even more worrisome.

“It doesn’t seem like anything,” Inzaghi said of Dimarco.

“He stayed on the ground, but the doctor didn’t notify me of anything.”

“He had spent a lot of energy with the national team, the same with Bastoni, Barella, and the South Americans,” Inzaghi noted.

“I was a bit worried ahead of this match because I only got the South American internationals back 24 hours before the match.”

And Inzaghi also gave his backing to midfielder Kristjan Asllani.

“Calhanoglu’s backup is Asllani,” the coach said. “He’s a player we wanted to keep hold of. There were some requests to sign him in the summer, but we wanted to keep him.”
